Improve Mobility and Confidence
Pain is such a drain, which is much more than just pain. If you’ve dealt with pain for a while or feel that nagging ache on and off, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Pain doesn’t just affect your movement, it starts to seep into your confidence in yourself, patience for obstacles or others in your life, sleep and even motivation to do anything at times.
Pain really zaps your will power to say ‘no’ to some things and to say ‘yes’ to things that progress you forward in your life. It’s tougher to want to hang out with friends and family, especially if they are doing something that your pain would limit you in experiencing. It’s tougher to get started on your latest professional task or project helping you have a reason or excuse to put it off till later.
It gets exhausting, draining you of even more energy and will power, to always be thinking about not bending over or twisting a certain way or you’ll throw your back out. Or, how much are my heels going to hurt when I get out of bed? Or, will I be able to turn my neck to the right tomorrow morning? Maybe it’s not your back, heels or neck. Maybe it’s the radiating of sciatica going down the back of your leg that has gone from occasional to consistent.
If you’re pursuing athletic pursuits and your IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis or hamstrings keep popping up, suddenly your whole training focus goes away from your goals and all towards your pain.
These last two paragraph’s injuries, or ‘pains,’ were not chosen randomly, they were all ‘pains’ I, Jonathan, had personally gone through before I started training my nervous system first. I know how much energy it takes just dealing with a locked up back or neck all day. Either spending the day in one position on the couch or floor trying not to wiggle my back into a sudden seize or having to walk around like batman leaning back as far as I can to look up or turn my whole body slowly to look to the right. It’s frustrating, draining and at times embarrassing.
“ We start by having you go through a movement assessment to find gaps in strength, tight areas and restrictions your body currently has. From there our expert trainers put together a personalized plan for yourself starting with easy movements and patterns of movements to stimulate and recalibrate your nervous system to turn on dormant muscles and release both long and short muscles that have been locked up for efficiency. We support your in person sessions with your trainer with at home videos needed to give you guidance and consistency to succeed when you’re on your own. ”
“From chronic pain to athletic pain the answer is not muscular, it’s neurological.”
Making sure I have a plan of attack to support myself getting out of bed in the morning in case my heels hurt so bad I can’t put weight on them. Full on plantar fasciitis setting in as I was training for a running race. Knee pain from IT band syndrome led to me stretching it out with pigeon pose and eventually having a meniscus tear. Anywhere along the path of this current paragraph you might be, I can guarantee you not only have frustration set in but so have a lot of time off from training for your goal. Sure after a week or two the pain and/or swelling has subsided and you’re able to either deal or adjust to your setback. But what no one has been telling you, if you didn’t strengthen the muscle imbalances that led to your setback, during your setback, and start training moving forward with a new plan that includes the appropriate demand that is obviously missing from your athletic pursuits, your first time setback will start to become an on and off thing.
Like any pain that we deal with regularly you will find ways around it, at first. Maybe it’s a different brand of shoe with more cushioning or an insole that has been molded with astrophysics to your foot. But it will come back. Maybe over the years you have come up with the perfect combination of magical gear or potions to help you minimize your pain, but you know it’s always around. And if you have come up with the perfect combination of inflatable calf sleeves supplemented with red light therapy and a bespoke tincture during your time letting the external panaceas do their magic, all that time it has taken for you to come up with your perfect routine, you could have just been training for your goals.
All of the passive, or external, ways of dealing with pain can be fun to try out, can seem like they work at first while also being a hopeful and possibly trendy distraction that might even be social media worthy. But if they are a regular part of your lifestyle and you’re still dealing with pain, there’s a reason why. Your nervous system is not affected or changed by the passive, or external, ways of dealing with pain, only your biological or muscular systems are.
From chronic pain to athletic pain the answer is not muscular, it’s neurological. Your nervous system is in charge of and controls your muscles. Your nervous system is responsible for firing muscles in the correct order or sequences for your movement and coordination. Your nervous system is responsible for lengthening or shortening your muscles to create a dynamic tension throughout your body to align your skeleton in a way that uses the least amount of energy as possible based on what you do with your body and muscles on a regular basis. Like an algorithm predicting what you are going to use your musculoskeletal system for in future from what you have done with it in the past and optimizing muscle activation and length to do it more efficiently every next time.
If you are sitting in a car traveling, at a desk working, at a table eating or on a couch lounging your nervous system is taking note and adjusting your posture, or dynamic muscle tension. If you are hunched over looking at your phone, chopping and prepping a meal or walking down the street looking at your feet having a hard time keeping eye contact with others, your nervous system is taking note and adjusting your posture, or dynamic muscle tension.
Goals, athletic or physical pursuits usually include a repetitive motion that limits your musculoskeletal system to move through limited or fixed planes of motion and ranges of motion. Your body locked on a bicycle never extending your hips, playing a racket sport that keeps you twisting in more one direction with a lot of stops and starts laterally and hardly ever extending your elbow, or even hitting up a box workout that seems to be getting you stronger even though you’re always getting injured, your nervous system is taking note and adjusting.
All this adjusting your nervous system is doing is what is leading to your pain. External techniques, like body work, stretches, heat/cold, etc. and tinctures, like pain relieving pills or drinks, can give you temporary relief but since they do not reprogram your nervous system, when their effects wear off you are left in the same position. With pain, less energy and even more frustration with yourself.
Whether chronic or temporary, we tackle pain differently at Spears Strong. We start by having you go through a movement assessment to find gaps in strength, tight areas and restrictions your body currently has.
Generally if you are looking for pain relief, you have been going through pain for sometime now. That means there is a good chance that you have levels of tightness and pain locking up in your body that you dealt with previously to get to your state of pain, discomfort and dysfunction you are experiencing now. This means all those little pains that you were able to deal with daily eventually created movement patterns around the pain that led to worse and worse movement patterns controlled by your nervous system.
Our program does not just help with the current pain you are experiencing and start to relieve it and become a thing of the past, but eventually will expose the lesser pain you were experiencing before your current pain brought you to us. Our training will go backwards through all of your past injuries including twists and sprains that were never addressed with training and the time and strengthen your nervous system’s connection to the proper firing patterns to move the way you were supposed to before injuries and pain became a part of your life.
Get your energy and confidence back through our training programs.
